About Your Teacher
Jeremy Safron began his studies in the martial arts at 9 years old when his parents took him to the local YMCA and placed him in a kung fu class. His interests in martial arts had been sparked a few years earlier when his parents bought their first TV. While Jeremy’s younger brother wanted to spend his 2 hours a day (on the weekends only) watching cartoons, Jeremy wanted to watch kung fu.
Every day after school, Jeremy and his friends would think up “kung fu challenges” to help push each other in the practice and development of martial arts skills. In the summertime when Jeremy went to camp he would spend his time focusing on judo and fencing. During these formative childhood years Jeremy had the opportunity to study various martial arts and meet other students of kung fu.
When Jeremy was a teenager he moved into New York City full time with his mother and her new husband (a Vietnam Veteran.) Manhattan provided various teachers and a plethora of styles of martial arts to study. Between first hand combat practice with his stepfather, varsity wrestling practice, study with a local private kung fu instructor and meeting a Chinese opera / wushu troop in central park Jeremy’s high school years were filled with martial study and grueling hours of practice.
After leaving home, Jeremy made it his quest to seek out martial arts masters all over the world and apprentice himself to them. He traveled for 2 years meeting kung fu masters and had his first encounter with yoga in Burlington Vermont. When Jeremy returned to NYC an old friend from central park brought him to Dharma Mitras Yoga School.
For 3 years Jeremy was there almost every day taking in all the knowledge of yoga he could. Martial studies became very specified for Jeremy at this point. There was Wing Tsun and Ba Qua in Chinatown 3 nights a week, both with grandmasters of these potent arts. There were esoteric arts like Er Mei chi kung and internal alchemy study groups. Jeremy managed to even practice with the Chinese opera troop he had met in the park many years before.
The old friend that had brought Jeremy to Dharma Mitra invited him to visit Hawaii where he lived. Jeremy traveled there and thru an unseen set of circumstances ended up moving there. En route to Hawaii (a journey filled with excitement and intrique) Jeremy stayed in San Rafel California for 5 months and studied Tai Chi with Robert Amaker (one of Chen Man Ching’s top students) Jeremy also got to take a few classes from Kumar Francis who was teaching in the bay area at that time.
Once in Hawaii Jeremy took his study of yoga to new levels. Maui had many old school yoga practicioners who had gone to India in the 60’s. The most vibrant and masterful of these were the followers of Pathabhi Jois the creator of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Jeremy began a diligent daily practice of the Ashtanga Primary series and studied with many of Jois’s students (especially Lucy) until finally studying with Jois himself.
From Maui Jeremy renewed his travels and sought out masters world wide. Traveling to Thailind to meet Master Jo, going to Hollywood to meet Byong Yu, even returning to New York to study with the oldest living man in the world, Swami Bua.
In the year of the Dragon (2000) Jeremy was divinely inspired and created Dragon Yoga a fusion of kung fu, chi kung, yoga and years of Jeremy’s personal experience. For many years Jeremy has traveled teaching Dragon Yoga and refining the system into a powerful set of practices.
Recently Jeremy has developed a martial arts training toy called the Attack Sack ® and continues to teach Dragon Yoga at his off the grid healing sanctuary in Maui
