Drishti / Focus
Our mind is always active, that is the nature of the mind. The purpose of meditation isnt to stop the mind or control it, moreover its point is to focus the mind. By diligently practicing yoga and chi kung we can build our mind force into a potent single pointed focus. The drishtis are the points of concentration or hightend awareness that are held in the consciousness while maintaining a pose or movement. In traditional yoga the primary drishtis are places such as: the tip of the nose, the big toe, a wall 10 feet away. In chi kung the focal points are often places like: the horizon, infinity, or 6 inches in front of your eyes. High level concentration exercises such as yantra practice and trataka are good ways to develop deeper drishti durring yoga and cultivate dharana (the 5th limb of yoga).
